History Of Tamimi Markets
Tamimi Markets is owned by AlTamimi Family under Tamimi group of companies. The Tamimi Group was established in 1953 by Sheikh Ali Abdullah Al Tamimi to provide pipeline construction, general construction, and support services for Saudi Arabia’s rapidly expanding oil and manufacturing industries. Over the past 70 years, the Tamimi Group has grown and diversified into more than 30 successful businesses that contribute to the realization of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.As an innovator, Sheikh Tamimi saw an opportunity in 1979 to introduce the Kingdom’s first modern supermarket in Khobar, Eastern Province. Partnering with the US retail giant Safeway Stores, Tamimi Safeway brought international standards and quality food products from around the world. The stores quickly gained popularity, attracting both Saudi and expatriate customers from across the Eastern Province. The chain soon expanded to new locations throughout the Eastern and Central provinces of Saudi Arabia. When Safeway refocused on its US domestic markets in the 1980s, the Tamimi family acquired the remaining shares of the joint venture but continued their friendship and supply arrangements with Safeway. Today, a wide variety of Safeway Signature, O Organic, Open Nature, and Lucerne Dairies products can still be found on our shelves. Our portfolio now includes Costco USA’s Kirkland Signature brand, Sainsbury’s UK brands, and our own range of Healthy Living products – unique ‘Good for You’ solutions featuring natural, organic, and free-from healthy goods from around the world. In 2011, Tamimi Markets took another bold step by emphasizing its leadership in fresh products and unveiling a new modern design to make shopping even more appealing, experiential, and enjoyable. The original store on the Khobar Corniche served as the blueprint for future development, and the chain rapidly expanded from 15 stores in 2012 to over 100 stores across the Kingdom today. On June 2023, the PIF became a shareholder with 30% ownership of Tamimi Markets by way of a capital increase and subscription of new shares. This investment is expected to accelerate Tamimi Markets’ ambitions to become a national champion and major regional grocery chain. The national store network of Tamimi Markets now stretches from NEOM and Tabuk in the far northwest to Abha in the southwest, covering the entire western seaboard including Jeddah, plus Qassim, Hafr Al Batin, Jubail, Al Hasa, and the Kingdom of Bahrain. And we are just getting started! Tamimi Markets is well on its way to achieving its goal of 200 stores by 2030. Our modern supply chain includes new distribution facilities in Dammam, Riyadh, and King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC – north of Jeddah).
